About The Artist
Sailoz Mookherjea (1907-1960) is a legendary figure in modern Indian art. He came to Delhi in the early 1940s, most likely in 1943. It was a city bereft of a vibrant cultural life. There wasn’t much art visible anywhere, with the possible exception of the Mughal architecture of the old city that began from Qudsia Gardens, just beyond Kashmiri Gate and ended at Delhi Gate or today’s Asaf Ali Road. Whatever modern art there was in Northern India was in Lahore, the cultural hub of the region.
