PAINTER

Abbas Batliwala

"The domain of Art belongs to the humble, yet it is seldom that we come across an artist who whilst he establishes a samvad would let the eyes listen and talk, urge the colours to be the symphonic notes and the chiaroscuro a balletic move; Abbas Batliwala is one contemporary painter who endeavours to create such an interfacial canvas"

His paintings have a unique strength to appeal to the layman and the connoisseur alike, the peeping 'eye' of the dramatis personae emanate a subtle humour through wit for some but for a rasik, the leit motif indicates an inquisition and indictment where the predicament of the common man had ossified him in an eternal limbo. The texture confronts the contemporary in its entire complexity, the minute brush strokes capture the bursting seams of an aging jute bag whilst the prime colour clad puppet engaged in an eternal caricature is foregrounded through a pastel wall.
His essentially Horatian humour and the signature ironic interplay on/of the canvas assimilates the mundane spectrum by foregrounding a reality that more often than not 'lies beyond the ken of human eye'. The humane angst of the omnipresent 'eye' is the custodian of our nation, of the uncountable humanity that through sheer grit and courage survive in the by lanes and village hutments.

Artist Biodata

Born in 1958 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, Abbas Batliwala achieved his postgraduate degree in Drawing and Painting from Udaipur University. His artistic inspiration draws from folk forms, resulting in artwork that radiates an exaggerated sense of awe. Employing a caricatured figuration, Abbas effectively captivates the audience's attention. This sense of astonishment comes to life through his unique artistic style, featuring large, oversized eyes reminiscent of seashells (kauri). These eyes are intricately drawn and painted, contributing to his distinct aesthetic. The scenes he portrays often carry a touch of melodrama, with his characters frequently appearing intricately intertwined.

Abbas has crafted an accomplished career as an independent artist, amassing numerous accolades and awards at both national and state levels. His artistic journey has encompassed various exhibitions in prominent locations such as Delhi and Mumbai, as well as international art events including the 7th International Triennale – India, the 6th Asian Art Biennale – Bangladesh, and India Month – Rotterdam and Mumbai. His creations have earned a revered place in esteemed collections both within the country and abroad. Notably, his works grace collections at institutions like the Rajasthan State Lalit Kala Academy in Jaipur, Rajasthan, as well as the National Gallery of Modern Art and Lalit Kala Academy, both situated in New Delhi.
