One of the leading painters from India, John Wilkins is also among the most expensive painters in India. Born on 20 June 1927 in Karnataka, he started his career by painting billboards and then went on to be an Art Director with different advertising agencies, but soon he quit and moved his focus entirely to painting. A versatile artist both in content and form he always pursued art with dedication and devotion and always remained open to new trends and techniques.
Artist Biodata
Most of his paintings are held by private collectors, a few corporations and Government Departments like the British High Commission and the Singapore High Commission. In February 2010 an offer of $2.5 million for one of his paintings by a member of one of the Royal families from the Middle East was refused by an art collector in India. He died in 1991 in Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
The Dhoomimal name is now touching eighty-five years of promoting contemporary Indian art, in this capacity a flagship enterprise within the fraternity, having witnessed the evolution and growth of art and art institutions from their very inception within the country.
